Academic Leadership Institute Kicks Off In November

The annual Dr. John Hoyle Memorial Academic Leadership Institute (ALI) will be held November 2-3 at the Thomas G. Hildebrand Equine Complex. ALI, in partnership with the Texas Association of School Administrators and the School Research Nexus, brings educators from districts across Texas to discuss meaningful steps toward addressing the future of education. This year’s theme is Keys to Great Leadership.

The first day features a session lead by Overflow Communications. This Austin-based company will talk about important media guidelines and how to effectively frame messages across multiple platforms. As technology and social media continues to play a heightened role for educators, this session will help attendees gain feedback and learn techniques to better reach students, faculty, staff, and parents.

“We’re pleased and very excited about this because it’s such a great opportunity for aspiring and learning. It allows professionals and other practicing school administrators to receive information that they may not have normally received and it’s also an opportunity to network from colleagues across the state. It’s important to see perspectives and to share ideas that you may not have thought of before,” said ALI director and clinical associate professor Dr. Robert Muller.

The second day of ALI will feature interactive sessions from a diverse panel of guest speakers. Spring ISD superintendent Dr. Rodney Watson will open the day presenting information about the district’s Urban Internship Project. This ongoing project focuses on teachers aimed at impacting student learning in urban areas.

Following Spring ISD’s session, nationally renowned economist Dr. Ray Perryman will hold a session titled ‘Economics and Texas Schools.’ Dr. Perryman, who performs economic analyzes for several of groups, will highlight key ideas amongst school administrators.

Afterward, Chris White of the Flippen Group will do a presentation involving 19 tips for avoiding common conflict mistakes. His tips promote conflict resolution.

The final session of the day will be lead by Dr. Frances Deviniey, associate director of the Center for Public Policy Priorities. Dr. Deviney will present the ‘State of Texas Children 2016’. Attendees will receive important child well-being information and metrics related to specific districts

Attendees can also look forward to additional learning and professional development opportunities through the School Research Nexus. The opportunities are voluntary to attendees and will be offered the afternoon of November 3 and the morning of November 4.
