Dr. Anthony Gardiner Receives Excellence In Mathematics Education Award


Texas A&M University has named Dr. Anthony (Tony) Gardiner the 2016 recipient of the Excellence in Mathematics Education Award. Dr. Gardiner’s career in education spans over 40 years during which he made a significant contribution to enhancing the problem-solving skills for math students beyond the United Kingdom.

Dr. Gardiner received his doctorate in 1973 from the University of Warwick, UK. He taught at the University of East Africa from 1968-69 and later at the University of Birmingham from 1974 to 2012, where he retired. He also held many visiting positions at other universities including: The University of Germany, The University of Waterloo, and The University of Melbourne

With a total of 16 written books on mathematics and problem solving, and a number of published journals, Dr. Gardiner made significant changes in the UK mathematics curriculum. He has worked alongside many UK Ministers of State for Education for his expertise on problem solving and his insights into omissions in UK mathematics education.

In 1996, Dr. Gardiner helped found the UK Mathematics Trust, a charity that organizes nationwide mathematics competitions and enrichment activities taken by over half a million students per year.

Dr. Gardiner has also served in multiple high-level leadership positions in mathematics education both in the UK and internationally. Some of his work includes: working on the council for the London Mathematical Society, serving as president of the (UK) Mathematical Association, chair of the Education Committee of the European Mathematical Society, and Senior Vice President of the World Federation of National Mathematics Competitions.
