Reimagining Global Teacher Education
CEHD Professor’s Award-winning Publication Addresses Impact of Shortages, Pandemic
Dr. Cheryl J. Craig of our Department of Teaching, Learning and Culture teamed up with longtime collaborator, Dr. Maria Assunção Flores of the University of Minho, Portugal, to tackle one of education’s most urgent challenges: how to reshape teacher education in response to global teacher shortages and the lasting effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Their editorial, Reimagining teacher education in light of the teacher shortage and the aftershock of COVID-19: Adjusting to a rapidly shifting world, published in the European Journal of Teacher Education, earned the 2025 Outstanding Publication Award from the International Study Association on Teachers and Teaching (ISATT). Selected by leading researchers from five continents, the award recognizes a world-class publication that not only advances academic thought but also drives real-world change.
Already ranked in the top 93% for readership and citations by the respected research database, Scopus, the editorial is influencing how educators, policymakers and institutions think about teacher preparation, support and retention in a post-pandemic world.
While accepting the award at ISATT’s biennial conference at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, Craig also learned that a book she co-authored with members of the Houston-based teacher research group, the Portfolio Group, is now a core teacher education text at a major university on the east coast. Knowledge communities in teacher education: Sustaining collaborative work is the volume’s title (Emerald Publishing).
Craig serves as the Chair of the Teaching and Teacher Education program area. She is also the Houston Endowment Endowed Chair in Urban Education and the Founding Director of the Collaborative for Innovation in Teacher Education.
