Dr. Michael Greenwood, Clinical Professor in the Department of Health and Kinesiology, passed away on Sep. 21 at the age of 63.

He received his Bachelor of Science in Education from Greenville College in 1978, his Master of Science in Education from Northern Illinois University in 1983 and his Doctor of Philosophy in Exercise Science from Texas Woman’s University in 1990.

Greenwood joined the college in 2010. He was a research associate in the Exercise and Sports Nutrition Lab and taught graduate-level courses in the department. He also served as a clinical professor in the Department of Food and Nutrition Science in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

Dr. Richard Kreider worked alongside Greenwood in the Exercise and Sports Nutrition Lab as director.

“Dr. Greenwood was an amazing coach, teacher, mentor and research scholar. He made a profound impact on his athletes, students and profession. His pioneering work to advance the fields of strength and conditioning and sport nutrition through his research and professional service to the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the International Society of Sport Nutrition has made a profound impact on the lives of countless students and professionals. More importantly, Mike was a caring teacher, loyal friend, loving husband, proud father and man that lived his faith and inspired us all,” Kreider said.

He is survived by his wife, Dr. Lori Greenwood, who is also faculty in the department and his son, Bryson Greenwood.
