Sylvia Fernandez, although an Aggie at heart since age 16, received her B.S. from University of Alabama and an M.A. from UTSA. In 1988, she received her Ph.D. from the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) at Texas A&M University. She spent 40 years in the educational arena, retiring from the UT Health Science Center in San Antonio, as Director of Student Life. Sylvia was a charter member of the CEHD Dean’s Development Council, serving from 1981 to 1992. She has been active in the San Antonio community including the San Antonio Area Foundation, Region 20 Educational Service Center, American Cancer Society, as well as, past chair of the Governor’s Commission for Women. She currently serves on the Texas A&M University Press Advancement Board and has enjoyed spending time at Fernandez Elementary School for the past 25 years. Sylvia has been married to Raul ’59 for 54 years and they have two children, Monica ’84 and Michael ’88; as well as, three grandchildren and four great-grandsons.
