Project METAS

Meaningful Engagement Using Critical Thinking and CreAtive Problem Solving to Increase English Learners’ Science Literacy (METAS): An Innovative Teacher Professional Development Framework Focusing on Teacher Effectiveness and Classroom Discourse.

About METAS

Project METAS (“METAS”) is an online mentoring training program that includes mentor coaching sessions conducted by expert in-service bilingual education teachers (CEBETS). METAS is designed specifically for teachers of English learners (ELs)/Emergent Bilinguals (EBs) who represent 9.2% of the student population in U.S. public schools with the Southwest having the largest share (Pew Research Center). Note: Here we use the terms English learners and Emergent Bilinguals, which are currently in use by State agencies and departments.

METAS aims to prepare in-service teacher mentors and their mentees to effectively teach PreK–6 EL/EB students by developing their understanding of the following:

  1. evidence-based and practitioner tested (using action research) instructional strategies,
  2. standards-based practices for teaching ELs/EBs, and
  3. the application of theoretical frameworks underlying second language learning pedagogy.
