Dr. James Carson Named New Huffines Institute Director
Renowned Physiologist Dr. James Carson brings his 30+ years of research and leadership experience to our School as the new Director of the Sydney and J.L. Huffines Institute for Sports Medicine and Human Performance.
Carson previously worked at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, where he served as the College of Health Professions Senior Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies and a professor in the Department of Physical Therapy. Before that, he served in various leadership roles at the University of South Carolina, where he led the Exercise Science doctoral program to the top of the National Academy of Kinesiology’s Ph.D. program rankings for 10 years.
Much of Carson’s research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), including the use of molecular biology to study how muscles work and how they’re affected by cancer, injury recovery and chronic inflammation conditions. NIH also funded his post-doctoral fellowships at Baylor College of Medicine and the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. Carson’s passion for research extends to his experience mentoring students from high school through the doctoral level.
Carson says he looks forward to using his leadership experience across higher education to mentor students and faculty while growing the Huffines Institute as a resource for faculty-driven research, scholarship and opportunities to collaborate across colleges.
Carson will begin his new role on June 1, 2024.
