Dr. Joshi receives university honor

Dr. R Malatesha Joshi is one of three Texas A&M University faculty selected for the 2021 University Professorship award.

The University Professorships were created in 2019 to honor faculty who have demonstrated significant and sustained accomplishments in their field. These faculty have gained recognition both nationally and internationally and are committed to inclusivity, diversity and excellence in teaching and service.

“Receiving this prestigious award, especially coming from distinguished colleagues, is highly meaningful for me and I am grateful,” said Joshi, professor in the Department of Teaching, Learning and Culture. “However, it would not have been possible for me to accomplish this without the help and support of my graduate students and colleagues at Texas A&M University, and in other labs nationally and internationally.”

Joshi was recognized for his contributions to theory, practice and research in literacy among monolingual and bilingual/second language learners. His groundbreaking theoretical models relating to the Simple View of Reading and Componential Model of Reading are referenced in hundreds of research studies.

Joshi’s work, and other work he has inspired, has improved the lives of children across the globe.

Joshi will receive an annual $5,000 stipend for three years and will retain the right to use the title so long as he remains a faculty member in good standing.
