Grant Supports Research for Girls’ Education in India
Dr. Ananya Tiwari of our Department of Educational Psychology has earned a prestigious research grant that will fuel her efforts to improve girls’ education in India. The Spencer Foundation Vision Grant will help fund her one-year project to create a gender-transformative educational ecosystem in the country’s rural and underserved communities.
The Spencer Foundation Vision Grant supports ambitious research aimed at transforming educational systems to promote equity. Tiwari and her colleagues will work with government officials, educators, researchers, families and community organizations to prioritize education for girls in a region representing one-sixth of the world’s population. “In many ways, this is a new field creation opportunity for us to reimagine and influence current systems in a way that prioritizes girls’ education,” she said.
The project could advance to compete for a multi-year Transformation Research Grant of up to $3.5 million. Tiwari recently attended the Spencer Foundation retreat, describing it as “an inspiring space to explore the complexities of system change.”
Tiwari is the Principal Investigator of this study and will work with Dr. Payal Shah of the University of South Carolina and Dr. Anupam Ahuja of the SwaTaleem Foundation in India, who will serve as her Co-Principal Investigators.
