Numerous phone, tablet, and computer applications have been developed to support children’s learning. Despite the number available to us, it can be challenging to determine the nature and quality of these apps. Apps designed to develop writing often lean toward a singular focus of letter and form tracing. Although these support fine motor skills and letter form knowledge, writing components also include spelling and composing, both early learning standards for preschoolers in Texas. Other high-quality factors of young children’s writing apps consist of instant feedback, multiple ways of engagement, and ease of independent use for children.

- Tiggly Story Maker: Let your children create a world powered by their imagination and bring word-building and storytelling to life! Available for free on Android and Amazon devices.
- Montessori Movable Alphabet: This app provides children a way to “write” words to express themselves before mastering the use of pencil and paper! Available for $4.99 on Apple devices.
- StartDOT Handwriting: Unforgettable pictures and stories help children learn how to write their letters and numbers in a fun, new way! Available for free on Apple iPads.
- iWriteWords: Help Mr. Crab collect the numbered balls by dragging him with your finger – and drawing the letter simultaneously. Available for $2.99 on Apple devices.
