Unlocking the Power of Sport Data
New Collaborative Connects Texas A&M Students and Global Experts
Students and researchers in our Department of Kinesiology and Sport Management (KNSM) at Texas A&M University see sport as more than just competition—they see an environment rich in data where performance, business, and innovation intersect. Now the department is launching its new Collaborative for Sport Data Science (CSDS), aimed at advancing student research and connecting experts from across the country and beyond.
Dr. Jonathan Jensen, an Associate Professor in KNSM, is leading this effort and says that while sport analytics and data science have grown exponentially, its leaders have remained siloed across their respective fields. “We saw a need to create an initiative that leverages the power of sport to unite and bring experts in this area together, on a global basis,” he adds.
CSDS is designed to connect students, faculty and researchers in fields like computer science, economics, mathematics, sport management and statistics. So far, it has gathered dozens of Faculty Fellows from Texas A&M University and other leading public and private universities from across the United States and in countries such as Germany, Switzerland and Australia. The Collaborative is also affiliated with leading sport analytics labs at Carnegie Mellon, Samford and the University of Florida, as well as Texas A&M’s Center for Sport Management Research and Education (CSMRE), Institute for Data Science (TAMIDS) and Huffines Institute for Sports Medicine and Human Performance.
The Collaborative supports students through seed funding for research, help finding faculty mentors and hosting speaker series and symposia featuring top voices in sport data. Students can also work with faculty on real-world problems using real-world data.
CSDS will share its vision and connect with collaborators at the upcoming North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM) conference, May 27-30 in San Diego. They also plan to hold a football analytics symposium in Fall 2026.
