Remembering Dr. Larry Kelly

UPDATE Oct. 19: A private memorial service will be held for Dr. Larry Kelly’s family.

Dr. Larry Kelly, clinical professor in the Department of Teaching, Learning & Culture, passed away Saturday evening.

Kelly joined Texas A&M University in 2002. He led a long, fulfilling career dedicated to his passion of preparing teachers.

He served as the Director of the Graduate Certification Program and was integral in helping those with undergraduate degrees become certified teachers.

“We will greatly miss his presence and the many contributions he made to the success of our programs and graduates,” said Dr. Michael de Miranda, interim dean.

Kelly earned his Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Business from Abilene Christian University in 1968, Master of Education in Secondary Education from Sul Ross State University in 1997 and his Doctoral of Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Texas at Austin in 2002.

He published numerous research articles and received over $2.3 million in grant funding for his works. Kelly could often be found on Sunday afternoons preparing his classroom to ensure it was decorated and a welcoming environment for his students.

“His care and commitment to our students was unparalleled,” said Dr. Joanne Olson, acting department head of TLAC. “In my time here, I have seen and heard so many stories from Larry and others about his passion, his antics, his mentorship, and his joy. He loved his life’s work.”

A update of Dr. Kelly’s funeral services and obituary will be posted as it becomes available.
