Dance Science Program Receives Grant
The Dance Science program recently received a grant for its Dance Guest Artists Initiative. The grant will be used to hire a set of guest dancers during the next two semesters that will assist student dancers in performance.
“It felt great to receive this grant because I want the students to have the best experience possible,” said Instructional Assistant Professor Alexandra Pooley. “This is a way for us to bring professionals in performance and dance science into our classes and show students what goes on in the dance world.”
Both professional dancers come from different backgrounds and intend to provide a strong set of skills to the dance classrooms. Robin Kish is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Dance at Chapman University in California. Kathy Dunn Hamrick, of Austin, has been teaching dance for over 20 years and in her own festival every year.
“They’re coming in to teach and show our students their passion and expertise in the field,” Pooley said. “We really want to show the students a wide range of experience,” Pooley said. “They love getting perspective from those working nationally and internationally.”
Current dancers in the program are gearing up for their annual upcoming show entitled: Perpetual Motion. The performance will focus on a number dance styles including modern dance and ballet. Pooley describes the piece as having a physical theatre edge due to its incorporation of dance and speech.
The Perpetual Motion: Annual Dance Program Concert will be held on February 25-28 in PEAP 207.
