Huffines Discussion 6 Wraps Up
The Huffines Discussion 6 (HD6) concluded Friday at the Annenberg Presidential Library. Eight leaders in human performance and health education field took the stage and led a set of interactive discussions on research and professional experience. Hosted by the Huffines Institute for Sports Medicine and Human Performance and sponsored by the Department of Health and Kinesiology, HD6 continues to be a staple nationwide that highlights cutting edge research intended to tackle significant issues facing health and wellness.
Each speaker gave a 15-minute presentation followed by a live Q&A session run through social media that was steamed live to 33 satellite sites across the country.
“[This year] we recruited eight of the best speakers in our field, people who have big ideas, interesting perspectives and important things to say about sports, health and wellness,” said Huffines Institute Director Dr. Tim Lightfoot. “Each speaker has a specific perspective that is significant in the pubic conversation regarding sport medicine and health.”
The HD6 speaker panel included:
Dr. Bill Dexter from Tufts University School of Medicine. Dr. Dexter is a professor of Family Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine and an adjunct professor of Sport Medicine a the University of Southern Maine.
Dr. Sue Bodine from the University of California, Davis. Dr. Bodine Neuromuscular Physiologist who specialized in Skeletal Muscle Plasticity.
Dr. Russell Pate from the University of South Carolina. Dr. Pate is a professor in the Department of Exercise Science in the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina. He specializes in exercise physiology and has research interests in physical fitness in children and the health implications.
Dr. James Hill from the University of Colorado. Dr. Hill is a professor of Medicine and Pediatrics and is the founding Executive Director of the Anschutz Health and Wellness Center at the University of Colorado. He is a co-founder of the National Weight Control Registry and is also a co-founder of America on the Move, a national weight gain prevention initiative.
Dr. John Jakicic from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Jakicic is a professor and department chair in the Department of Health and Physical Activity, and is also the director of the Physical Activity and Weight Management Research Center at the University of Pittsburgh.
Ms. Chisa Yamaguchi from the Los Angeles based DIAVOLO | Architecture in Motion. Yamaguchi has had an extensive career in visual arts and dance. She is a certified artist on the teaching roster for the Music Center of Los Angeles and has been the Tour Engagement Education Director for DIAVOO for six years.
Dr. Peter Wagner from the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Wagner is an emeritus professor of Medicine & Bioengineering at the University of California, San Diego. He is currently editor-in-chief of the Journal of Applied Physiology. His research focus is on muscle capillary growth regulation.
Former All-Pro Quarterback Jerrod Johnson ’11. Johnson played quarterback for the Texas Aggie football team from 2006-2011, where he held numerous university quarterback records. Following graduation, Johnson played for a number of teams in the NFL and other North American football leagues.
