GRAB To Host 5th Annual Symposium
The Graduate Representative Advisory Board (GRAB) in the Department of Educational Administration and Human Resource Development will host its 5th Annual GRAB Symposium at the Memorial Student Center on Thursday, February 2. This year’s theme is “Transformational Learning: Transforming the World” and will feature guest speakers, an alumni and faulty panel, and more.
The symposium will focus on research conducted by different educators and practitioners within the field. It is also meant to serve as a networking tool in which prospective graduate students and non-GRAB affiliates are encouraged to attend.
“Primarily GRAB has served only doctoral students, but now we are evolving to include more undergraduate and masters students in the process,” said GRAB President Sarah Ray. “This event isn’t just for learning about GRAB, but it is more about connecting people to the department and the research.”
The guest speakers will include Dr. Juanita Johnson-Bailey, from the University of Georgia, and Dr. Cynthia Short, of Clear Creek ISD.
Dr. Johnson-Bailey is the Director of the Institute for Women’s Studies and a professor in the Department of Lifelong Education, Administration and Policy at The University of Georgia. With over 100 publication contributions to her name, Dr. Johnson-Bailey specializes in researching race and gender in educational and workplace settings.
Dr. Short is the Executive Director of Special Services at Clear Creek ISD. Her presentation is titled “Promoting Shared Ownership for Students with Disabilities.” Dr. Short has worked in special education for several years across different school districts in Texas and has served as a former coordinator, diagnostician, and special education teacher.
“We are looking forward to showcasing our researchers and faculty members first-hand who are highly productive in doing unique things for education,” said Ray. “The research that is being done has implications to policy makers and can be beneficial to a large amount of people.”
The 5th Annual GRAB Symposium will start at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, February 2 in MSC 2406. More information about the event including registration and the event schedule can be found the GRAB website.
