“What If You Fly?”: Sofia’s Journey to Graduation

How Aggie grit and academic coaching led to success

When Sofia Corredor ‘26 arrived at the College of Education and Human Development at Texas A&M University, she expected hard work would naturally lead to earning her bachelor’s degree in kinesiology. Instead, her early semesters were marked by stress, frustration and academic setbacks.

“I was trying everything I knew how to do, but nothing was clicking,” Sofia said. “When you’re putting in so much work and still struggling, it starts to take a toll on your confidence.”

A conversation with her academic advisor led Sofia to the Marilyn Kent Byrne Student Success Center, where she sought academic coaching. There, she met Destiny Andrews, who served as an academic coach at the time and now leads the Haynes Teacher Corps for Leadership, Citizenship and Civic Engagement.

“Sofia wasn’t lacking motivation or intelligence,” Destiny said. “She needed structure, strategies and someone to help her make sense of everything she was juggling.”

Academic coaching at the Byrne Center goes beyond tutoring or focusing on one course. Coaches work with students to develop skills such as time management, goal setting, organization, accountability and confidence.

For Sofia, that included breaking down overwhelming weeks into daily plans, learning how to prioritize tasks and holding herself accountable, which helped shift her mindset.

“One of the biggest changes was learning that struggling didn’t mean I wasn’t capable,” Sofia said. “I learned that failing isn’t the end – It’s information.”

A quote displayed in Destiny’s office also resonated with her: “What if I fail” Oh my darling, what if you fly?” by poet Erin Hanson.

Over time, Sofia’s confidence grew alongside her academic progress. She raised her GPA and started pursuing goals she once thought were out of reach, including studying abroad.

Sofia’s journey included a study abroad experience in Italy.

While in Italy, Sofia explored nutrition and culture while gaining independence and perspective. “Seeing what my work had led to reminded me how much I had grown,” she said.

Sofia is now preparing to graduate with her bachelor’s in kinesiology with a concentration in motor behavior. She’s also been accepted into graduate school at the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences, where she will pursue a master’s degree in occupational therapy.

Reflecting on her journey, Sofia hopes other students recognize that they don’t have to navigate challenges alone.

“Don’t limit yourself because of fear or doubt,” she said. “Sometimes all it takes is one person believing in you until you learn to believe in yourself.”
