Protecting Your Data Through Education
Dr. Mohan Yang of our Department of Educational Administration and Human Resource Development is leading a project with the National Science Foundation (NSF), cybersecurity experts and future educators to boost cybersecurity training across the United States.
The “train the trainer” approach is a three-year project backed by NSF that involves translating expert knowledge on topics like high-performance computing, big data and cybersecurity infrastructure into learning modules that are easier to understand. Yang explains this approach addresses, “how to integrate those knowledges within your field that might be relevant to the population of your local communities.” The project provides guidance and tools to help participants develop lesson plans that will drive awareness around the growing concerns of modern cybersecurity across all aspects of life, from personal information to education and business.
Yang has also partnered with multiple institutions to support participants who may not have access to high-performance computing facilities or other hands-on training resources.
Having recently completed the first cohort of participants, Yang’s work is already starting to have an impact. Participants across the country brought knowledge and expertise in fields including education, engineering, business, finance and computer science. As part of a culmination of their work, they led a learning seminar in their local communities to raise cybersecurity awareness while gaining real-world teaching experience. “They need to do some sort of training, either in their lab, class, a workshop, webinar — whatever way that’s accessible to them,” Yang explains.
Participants are also encouraged to use their training to support local K-12 teachers, staff and students, thus inspiring the next generation of cybersecurity professionals. With cybersecurity constantly evolving, the hope is to build a network of current and previous cohorts to pool their knowledge, training and resources so everyone is stronger and more prepared for the challenges ahead. “The main goal is to create a community of practice, and we want people to come together,” Yang said.
